All about Arcoa brand
A contraction of the names "Arcachon" and "Couach", ARCOA was the brand name that the Couach shipyards would use to market their boats to professionals. The Couach family were the ones who introduced the use of naval techniques in the design of car engines, so much so that this business was bought out by the manufacturer Renault. Arcoa "pinasses" (traditional French luxury boats) from Arcachon, powered by Couach engines, were popular along the meanders of the Congo in the middle of colonial French Equatorial Africa... After capitalising on the wealth of Oubangui-Chari, Gabon and the Congo, these boats returned to the metropolis...
For a long time an official services supplier, Arcoa delivered hundreds of boats to Customs, Maritime Affairs and the Gendarmerie. At the beginning of the 1970's, the shipyard took a new interest in yachting. Who better to enter this market than a company with roots in seaworthy engines and a business in professional shipbuilding like Arcoa? It was the era of motor sailors and other fifties, fashionable in those years before Arcoa diversified its activity based on a large range. This included express cruisers, the Mystics, with twin diesel engines, flybridge fishing boats such as the Arcoa 1080 Fishing or open boats, such as the elegant Arco 725 inboard, with its pleasant classic look.
Built with great attention to detail in Lorient, Arcoa's productions progressively went up in range, in a very competitive top-of-the-range market. Italians, British and Vendee-based companies are not scarce in these segments... After a turbulent industrial history, and several bankruptcies, the Arcoa shipyards ended up being liquidated in 2015. The end of a long history...
