In the 1990s, the Bénéteau shipyard released a new generation of Firsts. They were all seaworthy boats, sleek, lively at the helm and particularly attractive from an aesthetic point of view. Especially in their navy blue livery which contrasted with the uniform whites of the time. The First 210 especially has been an enduring success. The First 260 is from the same lineage, and while it may not have enjoyed as much commercial success as its younger sibling, it is not for lack of star qualities, but because of a whole cabin conundrum!
At the time, the shipyard chose to favour the cockpit, whereas some competitors offered aft cabins on board their boats of the same size... Because of this, the cockpit on the First is deep and has 2 real lockers. On the other hand, the interior is laid out according to a rather traditional plan, but one that is still very functional at sea. There's a galley and chart table on either side of the companionway, a saloon spanning the entire width of the boat and forward cabin that closes with a door.
Most of the First 260s came with the now well-known lifting keel system, which offers a sufficiently shallow draft to sail (almost) everywhere, but with a stand to stop the boat running aground. The 2 rudders offer good control of the boat, which proves to be very efficient. This well-designed hull had a long career of nearly 25 years, under different rigs and names.
