All about Contessa Yachts brand
When a British marine carpenter, who was well versed in fibreglass construction early on, founded his shipyard in Lymington, you were bound to get seriously well-built sailboat. When this same carpenter, Jeremy Rogers, a fine regatta and ocean racer, finished second on one of his boats in the 1979 Fastnet, the deadliest race of all time, which ended in 15 competitors drowning, you know you've got a man capable of designing a real racing-cruising boat!
So what do you expect from a racing cruiser? A certain quality of construction, performance and simple seaworthy facilities for living on board for the duration of a cruise. Designed by Doug Peterson, a Californian architect who was very active in racing cruisers in the 1970s and 1980s, the Contessa is characterised by its craftsmanship. With solid wood cabinetry, panelled partitions, and ash panelling on the older units, the Contessa is a handmade gem of a boat. The varnishes are applied with about ten layers, the keel weights are made of lead, and the rudder stock, made of stainless steel, is 45mm in diameter (on the most widely distributed French productions, certain yachts have composite stocks...), in short, it is very, very sturdy, etc.
It is not surprising that the Contessa 32, constantly in production between 1970 and today by the Jeremy Rogers Ltd shipyard, has seen 650 units built. The smaller Contessa 28 was a great success. Highly appreciated for their sturdiness, the Contessas are still very much in demand on the second-hand market.
