All about Gib Sea 33 model
Gib'sea 33, two boats, two generations!
To be exact, it's the Gib'sea 33 we mean, since 2 very different boats have been been given the same name. The first one, which rocketed out of the moulds in 1974, was designed by Philippe Harlé. It borrows a lot from the plans for the famous Romanée which was manufactured in aluminium by the shipyard Pouvreau at the time. The Gib'sea 33 was slightly shorter and designed to be moulded in polyester.
The Romanée made a whole generation dream of lengthy voyages at sea, while the Gib'sea 33's ambitions were more oriented towards pleasure boating. This is a boat that does well in a breeze, but whose 70's style interior has not aged well, unless you appreciate the vintage charm of the orange carpet! That doesn't prevent renovated versions (that are often extended by an aft skirt) from really floating their owner's boat.
In 1996, the Gibert marine shipyard located in Marans was taken over by Dufour. Following this takeover, the range was thoroughly redesigned and a new Gib'sea 33 was launched. This time the plan was the work of J&J design.
The boat is designed for rentals. It's all about interior space, and we have to admit that performance is not its primary objective. However, with its low overlapping jib, the boat is safe and easy to handle, including when you're sailing alone. With its large locker, open transom and wide ladder, the boat is also known for making life easier for divers.
