All about Sun Odyssey 42 model

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42s, being 42 feet (almost 13 m) in length are already large for cruising yachts.
This model includes two versions that can only be told apart by the letter "i":
The 1990 Sun Odyssey 42 and the 2006 Sun Odyssey 42i.

The shallow draught version is designed for those who love anchorages exposed to the tidal range, while the deep draught version transforms the boat by giving it a lot of stiffness against the wind.
Designwise, the 1990 Sun Odyssey 42 has a narrower rear end than the 42i, while its main beam is located in the middle of the roof (at ¾ rear for the 42i).

On the inside, the 42 (resin spread with a roller) is finished with internal linings while the 42i does without (injection).
Both yachts come with 3 or 4 cabin versions with 1 or 2 bathrooms and a galley on the starboard side for the 42, while the 42i's galley, still on the starboard side, has a U shape. The "rounded" saloon in the 42 is typical of the 1990s and the squarer saloon of the 42i follows the fashion of its time.
If there is one area where the older model has a clear advantage then it's the quality of the woodwork. The latter is sturdy and solid. Laminated wood was not yet the fashion! What an asset!
On deck, the 42's cockpit has a large central steering wheel while the 42i has two smaller ones which reach out to each side.
In terms of swimming, the 42 has a skirt and the 42i has a partially folding transom.
When sailing, these two big yachts are able to hold their own even in bad weather (they weigh more than 12 tonnes when laden), especially when they have a third reef on the mainsail.
