Nauticat 33: the tradition of motor and power sailing! In Finland, they know their stuff when it comes to cold weather and choppy seas.
This fifty, or motorsailer, is perfectly suited for this kind of climate. The comfortable pilothouse on the Nauticat 33 provides ample shelter in the rough weather it was designed to face. It is not uncommon for some "sailors" to view these fifties with disdain: you have to be familiar with Scandinavian sailing conditions to appreciate them. Currents and wind shadows combine to create harsh conditions in which an efficient boat with a high-performing engine is a real plus.
So it's not simply by chance that the Nauticat 33 from Siltala Yachts was so successful in Northern Europe! 1,500 units were built between 1966 and 1997. The first version was made with a polyester hull and wooden superstructures. A new polyester version was produced as late as 1979, equipped with 2 double cabins and a beautiful pilothouse comfortably seating 8 people for a meal, with an opulent interior that has generally aged well, at least in versions with polyester decks.
The Nauticat 33 is comfortable and can easily be considered as a boat designed for long cruises. As you would expect, the long keel and load capacity impact on sailing performance, especially upwind.
