All about Westerly 31 Berwick version
Westerly 31 Berwick: a double act! The collaboration between British shipyard Westerly of Waterlooville and architect Laurent Giles began in the late 1960s. The shipyard built the Centaur and Pageant, both solid and hefty boats made of polyester, which were very successful. Westerly then asked Laurent Giles to design a new, longer model able to take on various layouts to meet the needs of the most pleasure boaters possible.
"Design 0603" was completed in 1971 and was launched as the Westerly 31. With an overall length of 9.54m, the hull acted as the base for several widely different boats. Some were fitted out with an aft "racing" cockpit, while others featured an aft cabin and central cockpit. The boat was also made with 2 types of rigs, sloop and ketch, but the most crucial decision for future owners of a Westerly 31 was the ballast!
The traditional keel model was called "Longbow", while the twin keel version was called "Berwick". Westerly boats of this era put twin keels on the map, but also contributed greatly to their reputation for poor performance. But what a luxury it was to be able to visit dry harbours and take the ground without props! Despite their reputation as clumsy boats, Westerly 31 Berwick boats were by far the most popular, with used models continuing to be sought-after today.
