When the Jeanneau shipyard in Les Herbiers launched the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i in 2005, the aim was to create a multi-purpose yacht that would appeal to both family customers, who are keen on space, and charterers looking for cabins and ease of use.
This brief led to the creation of a yacht that was a long way from the shipyard's JTA (Jeanneau Techniques Avancées, which built maxi racing yachts) and oriented towards comfort rather than racing. For the latter, a "Performance" version was included in the catalogue and its much more powerful rig made a real transformation in the boat's behaviour. With a length of 11.86 m for a width of 3.88 m and at 7300 kg light, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i carries 71 m2 of sail area upwind and has an auxiliary engine of 40 HP.
This boat is not lightning fast, but what racers see as a disadvantage becomes an advantage for those who enjoy quiet cruising: it is a safe boat, not tricky to sail at and which is willing to forgive mistakes, even if a third reef would enable it to behave reassuringly in a stiff breeze. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i ("i" for infusion, the manufacturing process by which resin is vacuumed onto the fabric to ensure it is fully impregnated) was available in two draughts.
Inside, it features two or three cabins, one or two bathrooms, a saloon, a galley and a chart table. The cockpit is fitted with a central steering wheel and a skirt for easy launching.
