The Dufour 2800, a small cruising yacht offering plenty in the way of surprises.
With over 1,000 examples built, the Dufour 2800 has played a large part in helping to build the reputation of La Rochelle-based boat builder Dufour Yachts.
Measuring 8.23 metres (27 feet) in length, this is a very comfortable yacht for its size. The Dufour 2800 has three berths to offer, with two located in the saloon and the third, a more comfortable one, at the bow; and with its 1.80 metres of headroom (5 ft 11 in) and its folding saloon table, this yacht can easily accommodate two people without them getting under each other's feet. The Dufour 2800 also comes equipped with a marine toilet and a washbasin.
The finishes are fairly basic, but the fittings are practical, handy and well-thought-out. The small galley on the port side is equipped with a small two-burner gimballed stove and a sink. In its 8 HP version and with relatively little power to offer, the Dufour 2800's motor is really only intended for manoeuvring.
This is therefore a yacht made more for those who prefer traditional sailing, with the various minor constraints and limitations this can involve. Under sail, the boat performs well at all speeds – even when sailing close-hauled in light winds – thanks to its small wetted surface area. The slightly overlapping genoa greatly facilitates tacking, and the various grab rails on the roof and along the side decks make this quite a safe sailing boat.
