All about Dufour 385 model
The Dufour shipyard in Rochelais, France has been building elegant and efficient sailboats since 1964. Founder Michel Dufour took on the combined role of naval architect, engineer and sailing enthusiast. Owned by Fountaine-Pajot (catamarans) since 2018, Dufour continues to produce monohulls under its own brand.
The Dufour 385 is a 11.72m-long, 3.93m-wide sailboat launched in 2003 by the Dufour shipyard, which at that point had been owned by Italian company Del Pardo Yachts since 2001. Following the acquisition of Dufour, its new Italian owner undertook a complete overhaul of the range of Rochelais sailboats then known as Gib Sea.
The Dufour 385 benefits from the skills of renowned Italian architect Umberto Felci, who made significant changes to the boat, modernising it, while retaining its key features as a cruiser designed for sailing. It was launched with two possible draughts; a large and a small one. The Dufour 385 GL, short for "Grand Large", is a spacious sailboat designed for cruising. The most common version in terms of interior layout has three cabins and two bathrooms. 30hp Volvo engines were fitted as standard.
The cockpit has two steering wheels acting on a single rudder. The cockpit is relatively wide with a table that would buckle under a significant amount of unbalanced weight. The boat weighs 7.5 unladen tonnes and is easily propelled by a sail area of almost 78m2. It has relatively sleek lines and is also liveable with headroom of less than 1.92m.
