The 1990 versions of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36s are still going strong, the Sun Odyssey 36s and the 2010 version of the Sun Odyssey 36i. Faced with competition from the Vendée (Beneteau) and Germany (Bavaria), what makes Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36s so popular?
The result of an international collaboration between a French architect and interior designer as well as a British designer and builder, the Sun Odyssey 36 from 1990 (11 mx 3.80 m) has elegant lines that could be compared to those of a Hallberg Rassy... Classic but timeless.
Featuring a sloop rig with a strong overlapping genoa and automatic reefing, this is a comfortable and efficient all-weather cruiser with a midships beam which gives it an advantage upwind, compared to its more recent counterparts?
The 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36i ("i" for vacuum resin injection, as opposed to the roll-on system on previous versions) has seen a few changes in the hull and its aft beam which is very close in width to the master beam which is still located in the middle of the boat. Although on paper it appears slightly shorter (10.90 m) and narrower (3.59 m) than its predecessor, in reality this is not the case as the available rear width is exploited to the full. The result is a boat that is not so wide yet more habitable!
The Sun Odyssey 36s are designed with two or three cabins and one or two bathrooms.
This gives you two serious yet comfortable 10 m sailing boats, the oldest of which is worth little more on the second-hand market than a family car...
