Description
Shipman 28 is actually 29' long (8.86m), 2.6 m wide and has a draught of 1.55m - swedish design (Olie Enderlain, designer of many well known and good projects - inc. Halberg Rassys, Najad, OE's etc.)
GENERAL INFO ABOUT MODEL:
It is a relatively small but liveable-onboard sailboat with great sail characteristics and interior perfect for a single-handed sailor or a couple. It sleeps 4 in comfort, 6 maximum. It's been made by the same boatyard (Albin Marine) as well known Albin Vega, but it's superior to it with sailing abilities and comfort IMO.
Eye-catching, classic sleek dolphin-like hull lines, sturdy construction with thick laminate used, prelonged long delta keel (abilities to reverse like on modern boats), balanced sailplan with 2-reefs main and huge rolled genoa (plus spinnaker). I sailed it from Sweden all the way to Canaries and I find it a safe and easy petit bluewater cruiser.
As for the quite basic sailboat, it's well equipped, inc. fridge, diesel heating, fans, solar panels, electric water tap, all LED lights, navigation electronics, VHF-DSC with passive AIS and well working tiller autopilot.
ABOUT THIS SAILBOAT:
This Shipman is 1971 ("Flubbershy"), hull no. 92, registered under Polish flag, with full documentation from previous owners. Polish registration requires no yearly fees or technical inspections! The boat is well upkept, and is ready to sail. I prepared it to sail across Atlantic to Caribbean but I changed my mind. It is ready to go cruising and live aboard. It sails great and is seaworthy. Construction is sturdy and strong - with lots of laminate on the bottom and around the keel. It is perfect for a singlehanded sailor or a couple, but will accomodate your friends as well on shorter periods. I really like it - I was taking care after her with lots of heart. I leave a lot more of tools and cruising equipment that is not mentioned in the Equipment section.
ENGINE:
The motor is original (!) - I was considering to replace it but it is just working so great and fuel efficient that there was no point, I just took care after this one. 12hp Farymann diesel starts ALWAYS immidiately in any conditions, pulls the boat at 5 kts at 1400rpm on flat water, it has a hydraulic drive, which can save you when run aground, since you can change gears on high throttle - that gives you a huge punch of torque when needed. And yes, as a 50+ y.o. engine, it consumes and dips small ammounts of cheap SAE30 oil, but in my opinion it's better to keep it that way and just focus on topping up than have much more technical issues with more modern diesels. First rule of any mechanic: if it works fine, don't touch it - that especially being true to old diesels. Fuel consumption: 0.76-0.8 l/h.
- regenerated water pump (2022)
- new belts (2022)
- replaced alternator (2020)
Batteries were replaced in late 2021. 2 acid batteries: 95 Ah and 70 Ah. Main power cables were also replaced along with clamps.
